As the son of country music singer and songwriter Rhett Akins, has some big shoes to fill. His fame is slowly rising after releasing two albums, “” and “”, which have produced 10 singles on Billboard’s Hot Country Singles and Country Airplay charts, with six of them reaching No. 1 spot.
In addition to his own material, the 27-year-old singer/songwriter has written songs for the likes of , and . His singing/songwriting talent has proven himself to be one of the brightest acts in the country music industry as he has received several awards and nominations, including Country Artist of the Year Award at the 2017 iHeartRadio Music Awards.
Most recently, Thomas took home two main prizes at the 2017 ACM Awards. He was honored with Male Vocalist of the Year after beating out fellow nominees Aldean, , and . “Everyone in this category shaped the artist that I am,” he said of his unexpected win. “Thank you so much to the ACMs, this is the most amazing award that I’ve received in my whole existence.”
It was Thomas’ second big win at the country music’s biggest night as his song “Die a Happy Man” was named Song of the Year. The track, which he co-wrote with Sean Douglas and Joe Spargur, is a love song he dedicates to his wife Lauren Akins, whom he’s known since first grade. The song has received massive praise from music critics and was named Single of the Year at the 2016 CMA Awards.
Thomas is currently busy working on his upcoming third album. The set will boast appearances from some country singers, including his father. “My dad is featured on a song, which is pretty cool,” he said during a Q&A session at Outnumber Hunger Event. “I’m trying to be solely responsible for reviving his artistry career.”
In addition to country singers, the soon-to-be father will give a little bit of pop influence on his upcoming album as he teams up with on a collaborative track. “We have this girl named Selena Gomez sing on a song on the record and she’s pretty cool,” he said of the collaboration. “I love doing songs with different people and doing songs with friends.”
