Last spotted: As the general of the Dora Milaje and head of Wakanda’s international intelligence force, the War Dogs, Okoye helped King T’Challa reclaim his throne from an usurper, Erik Killmonger, the royal’s long-lost cousin. She appeared alongside T’Challa, Wakandan War Dog Nakia, and Dora warrior Ayo as the king stood before the United Nations to reveal Wakanda’s true nature to the world.
Current whereabouts: Okoye remains in Wakanda, a place she has dedicated her life to protecting. Only when the situation truly calls for it does she leave the boundaries of her home. (For example, when enemy of Wakanda, Ulysses Klaue, emerged in South Korea, she joined her king in an attempt to apprehend him.)
“She’s the type of person who will go where she needs to go, especially considering the fact that she’s also very deeply connected to what her king decides,” Danai Gurira says. “She’s led by her king. Being a general, you have a commander-in-chief and then you go by his decisions. She definitely lets him know her thoughts, but she goes by his decisions.”
With Wakanda now on the global stage, Okoye is preparing to defend earth against Thanos and his invading forces. Though T’Challa has opened his borders to the Avengers for a grand line of defense, she remains apprehensive of strangers entering her home. Thanos, Gurira notes, “is one of the biggest threats they’ve dealt with.”
Picked up from agent: “She hasn’t been excited about outsiders. You’ll see that in a very clear way in the movie. Outsiders, they threaten what they’ve tried to build up, but that’s the big question: Do we isolate or do we open up? It’s an interesting thing that’s highly relevant to what we’re dealing with in various parts of the Western world, but it’s from an African perspective, so it’s really interesting.” — Danai Gurira
