'Ocean's 8' Sets New Franchise Record at Box Office

Ocean's 8

Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett and Anne Hathaway led Ocean’s 8 to a new franchise record at the box office over the weekend. The film earned an estimated $41.5 million, according to Box Office Mojo, which is the biggest opening weekend in the history of the Ocean’s franchise (before adjusting for inflation).

Of notable interest, Ocean’s 8 attracted an audience that was 69% female, based on polls conducted by CinemaScore. That bodes well for upcoming films led by female stars, such as Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again! and The Spy Who Dumped Me; it’s yet another confirmation that women are more than willing to turn out for female-led films that they actually want to see. There’s been a shortage of stylish caper films that mix humor with the action, so that likely played into the equation as well.

Among independent releases, the low-budget horror drama Hereditary opened nationwide and proved to be a resounding success, raking in an estimated $13 million. Reportedly, its budget was just $10 million.

Overseas, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom was a monstrous success, earning more than $150 million in 48 international markets. The film was the top earner in every territory in which it was released, setting local records in Hong Kong and South Korea. It opened throughout Asia and Europe, with a release in China set for later this week. The film will open in U.S. theaters on June 22.

Upcoming releases include animated adventure Incredibles 2, comedy Tag and Hindi-language action thriller Race 3. We fully expect Incredibles 2 to have the biggest opening, but each nationwide release is targeting a different segment of potential moviegoers, so it should be fascinating to see how each one performs.
