Watch the First Trailer for Robert Zemeckis' 'Welcome to Marwen'; Here's Everything We Know

Jeff Malmberg’s Marwencol is one of the most beloved documentaries of all time. The 2010 feature may not have received an Oscar nomination or a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes or a significant box office gross, but the nonfiction film community went crazy for it, and pretty much anyone else who saw the doc since has been amazed by its unique human interest story.

Now Marwencol has been remade as a dramatic narrative picture by Robert Zemeckis, and it looks to warm even more hearts and inspire more moviegoers with its adapted tale of a man coping with a personal trauma by creating a fictional World War II-set town in his backyard with dolls. Welcome to Marwen is the name of the upcoming movie, and it’s got a magical new trailer.

Watch Steve Carell as both the real subject of the doc and the action figure version of himself that he’s created in the first spot below.

Here’s everything we know about Welcome to Marwen so far:

What is the movie about?

Same as Marwencol, this fictionalized adaptation follows the story of artist Mark Hogancamp, who was beaten into a coma outside of a bar one night in 2000. After more than a month in the hospital, he was discharged with brain damage, severe memory loss and no hope for therapy. So he dealt with things by constructing the made-up Belgian town of Marwencol in his backyard.

The miniature town, named for a combination of his own name with those of two women (MARk, WENdy, COLleen), is 1/6-scale and populated with dolls and old action figures. One of them is a soldier and bar owner modeled after himself. Others are based on friends and girlfriends. The men who attacked him are also in the model, as Nazis.

Who stars in Welcome to Marwen?

Steve Carell, who was cast many years ago, portrays Hogancamp and, through fantastically animated effect, the action figure version of Hogancamp. Another, seemingly villainous character in the fictional Marwencol is played by Diane Kruger (Inglourious Basterds), while real women in Mark’s life are played by Leslie Mann (Blockers), Janelle Monae (Hidden Figures), Eiza González (Baby Driver), Merritt Weaver (Birdman) and Gwendoline Christie (Game of Thrones). They also all have doll counterparts.

Who is the director?

Robert Zemeckis, who has helmed numerous iconic effects-pioneering movies, including Back to the Future, Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Best Picture winner Forrest Gump, is directing. This is the second recent documentary he has remade, the other being Man on Wire, on which he based his movie The Walk

Who wrote the script?

Zemeckis collaborated on the screenplay for Welcome to Marwen with Caroline Thompson, whose entries in the fantasy genre include such classics as Edward Scissorhands and the animated feature The Nightmare Before Christmas.

When does it come out?

November 21, 2018.
